Current Scientific Activity

My current research interest is field informatics. It is a transdisciplinary study that requires knowledge and mindsets from various areas such as environment, humanity and social sciences and humanities, socio-economics, big data, clouding computing, data science, spatial data infrastructure. Field here is defined as “a spatio-temporal area that is difficult to grasp via any analytical and/or engineering approach due to the co-existence of various individuals and entities, which results in the unexpected occurrence of seemingly accidental events thus necessitating our continuing commitment and caring.” Field informatics aims to provide solutions to various problems arising in the field from the standpoint of informatics. The components of field informatics are description, prediction, design and communication, and the methods range widely. Field Informatics can be applied to various scenarios such as nature observation, social participation, and innovation. Each scenario can be described with remote sensing, bio-logging, human sensing and ethnography, the effects of various options can be predicted with system dynamics and multi-agent simulation, and solutions can be designed using methods such as inclusive design and participatory design. In addition, this process can be communicated by case writing and outreach communication.

Summary of Professional Achievments

I got my PhD and MSc in the field of System Innovation from Osaka University, Japan in 2005 and 2008, respectively. I worked in IT industry from 2001-2003 and 2008 to 2012 as an IT project manager. I am interested in using PMBOK and Agile to manage our projects. As a result, my friends and I together developed a system for project management called ProjectKit (http://projectkit.net). We used it as an internal solution at first. Recently, we decided to open it publicly online for anyone who needs a solution for cloud-based project management. After three years working in IT industry, I moved to Vietnam National University, Hanoi to become a lecturer and a researcher. Lectures I am giving now are Project Management, Datawarehouse, System Analysis and Design. I started to be interested to field informatics. It is an transdiciplinary study and can be applied to various scenarios for human living such as nature observation, social participation and innovation. Our FIMO Center (Field Monitoring http://fimo.edu.vn) is currently challenging with environmental and socio-economics issues in Vietnam and in the region such as air pollution, forest fire, landcover/landuse change.
